The following is a multiple choice question I couldn't figure out by myself.

_______ be sent to work there?
A. Who do you suggest B. Who do you suggest that should
C. Do you suggest who should D. Do you suggest whom should

What puzzles me about this question is that I cannot rule out B the way an English teacher explains to his students, or in other words, I can sense that A is the only correct one here, but I can't tell with a sound "theory" why B isn't , thought I do feel that B may not be acceptable here. Thank you all. Expecting more significant assistance.

Did you read my reply HERE?

Yes, suggest can be tricky.
The answer is A because suggest has two possible structures: 1) with elipsis (missing some words out) and 2) a full sentence
1) I suggest (that) he (should) be sent there
2) I suggest that he should be sent there

We have these strange-sounding suggest/recommend + infinitive ("I suggested he stay" etc) because we are really clipping the that and should from the sentence. But even though the should is missing we still use the infinitive ("stay" not "stays")

B) is wrong because if you're going to include "that" you also need to include "should".

As I said, it's tricky stuff and hard to explain without a whiteboard! I hope this helps though.

NOT A TEACHER

What puzzles me about this question is that I cannot rule out B the way an English teacher explains to his students,or in other words , I can sense that A is the only correct one here, but I cann't tell with a sound "theory" why B isn't , thought I do feel that B may not acceptable here. Thank you all.Desperste for help.:-D

On the way,
please remember the following standards (courtesy of emsr2d2) of written English:

- Do not put a space before a full stop, comma, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Put a space after full stop, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, colon, semi-colon etc.

You can modify the thread title by going to "edit post" and then "go advanced".

You can modify the thread title by going to "edit post" and then "go advanced".

I'm afraid that only moderators can edit thread titles.

I'll do it now.

Re: Another multiple choice question puzzling for me. Desperate for help

Thank you sincerely for correcting my spelling my mistakes,my dear moderator. But I would be more grateful if you could even try helping (please notice it's “helping” not “to help”) me with the question I raised above .So, my deepest gratitude is extended to Martin. Anyway, your help, along with that of sandwich, which is probably no less significant, should be duly acknowledged here.

I'm afraid that only moderators can edit thread titles.

Members can do it too. I just tried editing one of my own thread titles and it can be done :-D.

Ok, I admit I'm much too sloppy in my writing. I hereby announce me and my space mistakes parting forever. You all will be witnesses of that partition (or parting? not sure). Thank you all, sincerely.
