Hi, my bf learns my mother tongue via an app called Duo in which i noticed something that got me confused, as I have a master's degree in Eng and i am very much into all the nuances.
My question is:
Is there a difference between
Why do you not respect your mother?
and
Why don't you respect your mother?
To me, there is a huge difference, as the second option is suggestive, meaning that this person suggests that respecting that parent is a good idea. Or do they mean the same?

Hi.

M
y bf boyfriend learns is learning my mother tongue via an app called Duo (I think you mean DuoLingo) in which I noticed something that got me confused me. as I have a master's degree in English and I am very much into all the nuances.

My question is: I have a question. Is there a difference between the following two questions?

1.
Why do you not respect your mother?
and
2. Why don't you respect your mother?

To me, there is a huge difference no comma here as the second option is suggestive, meaning that this person suggests is suggesting that respecting that parent one's mother is a good idea. Am I right or do they mean the same?

Please note my corrections above. Please don't use non-standard text on the forum. There are no such words as "bf" or "Eng".

The two questions can mean the same thing, the only difference being that the second uses "don't" as the standard contraction of "do not". I suppose you could argue that the second has an implied "You really should [respect your mother]".

I think the "huge difference" exists only in your mind, minia95. To me they are the same in meaning and in tone or register.
