Why else would we be here?

What is the usage of would in the following? What's the difference with "Why else are we here?"? They are in the same place, so would is a presumption or conditional mood? This is the hardest to understand among the usage of "would".

- They're getting married.

If they weren't there for that reason, they would have to be there for a different reason- the reason makes this an imaginary situation IMO.
