Since (I was) young, I have been interested in learning English.

I believe 'I was' is needed, but I don't know why. Could someone please let me know the reason? Thanks.

Because 'since young' is not English :). 'Since' is normally followed by a clause or a noun, not an adjective.

We could say: 'Since I was young', 'since my childhood', 'from a very early age'

Thanks, Fivejedjon.

It is a silly question but bear with me: Is it correct to say that the following sentence is correct and means the same as the first sentence I posted on this thread using "Since I was young"?

From a very early age, I have been interested in learning English.

Young is an adjective, a word that describes a noun. A noun is a person, place, animal, thing or concept. When using an adjective, the noun that it references is usually close by. You start your sentence with the clause, (Since --- young,) Within that clause you need a noun or pronoun.

It's fine.
