would wood

I don't think these two words have same pronunciation. But I found out that they do have same pronunciation in the dictionary. Both of them pronounce /wud/. Am I wrong?

No, you're correct. They are pronounced the same, as the 'l' in 'would' is silent.

The similarities are the source of a well-known tongue twister.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck would* chuck wood?

*Some versions use 'could' here.

Yes, and that is what Skrej correctly replied to.

The only actual question the OP asked was, 'Am I wrong?' The answer is, 'No you are correct.'

Assuming 'No, you are correct' means 'No, you are correct that they are not pronounced the same', it contradicts the following:
They are pronounced the same
I am confused.

It means 'No, you are correct that they are pronounced the same.'

If you read the original post again you will see that it is made up of four sentences. This is because the poster is not a native speaker.

Skrej, who is a native speaker, has correctly associated the question with the the idea expressed in the third sentence. This one says that both words are pronounced the same.

MW do you agree that the two words are pronounced the same?

Mike12345, does your above question refer to sentence 1 or 3 below?

Sentence 1.

Sentence 3.

I am sorry to make you feel confused. I refer to the sentence one. I also felt confused at first when I read Skrej's reply.

Now I got more confused with the pronunciation of these two words.

They are pronounced the same, as the 'l' in 'would' is silent.

Are you sure you have fully read Skrej's post 2? The answer is clear and can't be clearer.

I also agree that "wood" and "would" are pronounced the same.

Do you mean the following pronunciation of 'would' is impossible?

BrE weak form /wəd/,/əd/
NAmE weak form /wəd/ ,/əd/

With pronunciations in general.. almost anything is possible if you are open to regional variations. That pronunciation is uncommon.

BUT, in places where they might say "would" as /wəd/, they almost certainly would also say "wood" as /wəd/.
The two words would still be pronounced the same.

I'm not a teacher.

Didn't you see Piscean's reply?

Everybody now seems to agree that the words are pronounced in the same way. Can we leave it there?

Yes. I did. What did you make of his reply? That the two words are pronounced different?
