She would check her e-mail three times a day.

I think it is fine, right?

CAUTION: NOT A TEACHER

(1) In my humble (very humble) opinion, I think the answer is YES (you are right).

(2) I found this in the Longman English Grammar by the late L.G. Alexander, who I hear was very popular with international students because he explained grammar so clearly. I have the 1988 edition published by Longman of London and New York.

(3) Since I have given full credit, I believe that I may quote extensively:

(a) Study Mr. Alexander's examples: (The underlined words are my emphasis)

"We can refer to past habit" in three ways:

When I worked on a farm, I always used to get up at 5 a.m.
When I worked on a farm, I would always get up at 5 a.m.
When I worked on a farm, I always got up at 5 a.m.

(4) Therefore, it is only my opinion that the following are correct:

When she was in the hospital last month, she always used to check her email three times a day.

When she was in the hosptial last month, she would always check her email three times a day,

When she was in the hospital last month, she always checked her email three times a day.

Wow! What a great answer, Philo!

I could not sleep last night because I kept thinking that a sentence such as "She

would often be angry with me for no reason" was "correct," but I was afraid to

say so.

And this morning (It's 2: 30 a.m. in California) I read your super post, which I shall

now print out for my files.

A million thanks!

A million "you're welcome's"!
