Hi there, is it mandatory to use the word the in the following sentence?

Here is the example:

  1. Yesterday, my grandfather was admitted to hospital. Doctors are trying there best to save his life. The doctors said it will take more than fifteen days to be fully fit.

I know it is more usual to use they instead of (the) doctors but I just want to know if it is mandatory to put the word the in similar circumstances.

I would use "the doctors" in the second sentence and "they" in the third. You need the definite article to refer to the doctors at the particular hospital.

Say:

The doctors are doing their best to save his life.

So I think I write in this way "Yesterday, my grandfather was admitted to hospital. The doctors are trying their best to save his life. They said it will take more than fifteen days to be fully fit."

Am I right? Please confirm.

I see you've asked the same question here.

The world of English language forums is not huge and many people reply on more than one forum. Some users think that by asking the same question on multiple forums they will be getting lots of answers, but people who answer across forums get tired of seeing the same questions. Please ask your question on one forum at a time. Once one forum has dealt with it, then post it to another forum. If you don't, you will simply drive the most engaged responders from your posts, which will have the opposite effect to that intended.

This is my best guess.

The doctors are doing their best to save his life. They say that it will take him more than fifteen days to fully recover.

That's if he lives. Of course, if he dies he won't recover at all.

Do you know what we disagree about?

Please tell me. :-D

I say it should be:

The doctors are doing their best to save his life.

Some native speakers do use "trying their best" but that doesn't mean I have to agree with them. (The "trying" is in the doing.)
