You ________ drive carefully. The roads are slippery.

a) would better
b) would rather
c)had better
d) had rather

Am I right?

Thank you Sir.
Why can't we use ( would rather)?

Because 'had better' is used to give advice, but 'would rather' is not.

Thank you. [STRIKE]Sir.[/STRIKE]
Why can't we use "would rather"?

See my corrections above.

Don't refer to users here as "Sir". It is unnecessarily formal and it excludes all our female members. Enclose words or phrases you want to draw attention to in quotation marks, not in brackets.

Hello, Ali:

Just a gentle reminder that Americans often drop the "had" in ordinary conversation:

"You (had) better move out of the way -- or else!"

I agree with you.Would you answer my question, or you will comment only on my punctuation?

I agree with you. Will you answer my question (no comma required here) or will you [strike]will[/strike] comment only on my punctuation?

I'm not sure who that was directed at but as I'm the only person so far to correct your punctuation, I think it might be me. You had already been given perfectly good responses (posts 2 and 4) to both your questions (posts 1 and 3) by the time I read the thread so I took the time only to correct your errors.
