Hello,

I hate this gym. It's always overcrowded. Almost every machine is occupied by supposedly fit and attractive gym members who are just dying to take a couple dozen pictures of themselves, and you have to stand and watch them. Having waited most of your workout, you've got to head home, but, of course, you would've liked to have worked your muscles more.

Can the part in bold be used in the last sentence?

Thank you

1. You would like (now) to have worked your muscles more (in the past).
2. You would've liked (in the past) to work your muscles more (at that past time).
3. You would've liked (in the past) to have worked your muscles more (on an earlier past occasion).

There are not many occasions in which you need to use the forms in #3 in real life, though some people mistakenly use those forms when they should use those in #2.

Thank you, @5jj

Can I use this one if I want 'to have done' to indicate a past action?

- After a while, you realize that you've run out of time; you're really frustrated not to have done a few other exercises, but you've got to head home.

Can I use these if want 'to have done' to indicate a future action (in relation to the time when the decision was made)?

- After a while, you realize that you've run out of time, and you've got to head home, though initially you planned/wanted to have done a few other exercises by the time you left/before leaving.
OR
- Again, again, and again, and then you're out of time, and you've got to head home, despite the original plan being to have done a few other exercises by this time.
