Slang is acceptable when talking to people. It is not advisable if you are doing business with them or writing academic papers.

So if you are only going to be talking to people socially, you can get away with only colloquial English.

If you are planning on professional or business communications, then you need formal English.

No, you need a certain amount of English language sophistication to be able to figure out the real meaning of slang.
