Basically, you start by learning "received English" and as you become fluent you can use more idiomatic English and then slang terms.
There is a difference between using idiomatic phrases and slang.
When learning English, I'd advise you to learn standard, academic English first. Trying to learn idioms, slang, and the correct usage of the two is like trying to ride a unicycle without knowing how to ride a bicycle.
While learning standard English, you'll slowly be able to catch on to more slang and colloquial English.
