one too many?

Perhaps it was the emotional stress of saying goodbye to an old friend when the QE2 embarked on her final voyage.
Or maybe it was one too many nightcaps.
For whatever reason, John Prescott was to be found fast asleep in a chair after a long day aboard the luxury liner.

I've known "one too many" refers to drink too much. But how does it mean that?

I assume it would be okay for a person to drink appropriate cups of alcohol, eg. 10 cups, if he drinks another one and he will get drunken. Am I right? Thanks!

You've got the right idea, though for most of us ten is probably several too many.

Incidentally, 'cups' usually hold non-alcoholic drinks, like tea or coffee; you drink a glass af an alcoholic drink. And what a drunken person has done is 'got drunk'
