Question chubsy-ubsy ?

Bart Simpson pointed to a colossal statue of a man who held a giant doughnut for advertisement saying, "Well, except for chubsy-ubsy over there."

What does "chubsy-ubsy" mean? I think he referred to the statue. Thanks!

Someone who is "chubby" is on the verge of being fat. Bart is using "child-speak" by adding -sy and doubling the sound.

Bart was refering to another comedy from 1931 starring child actor Norman "Chubby" Chaney. He appeard in the Our Gang comedies from 1929 to 1931. "Chubby" was what the other kids called him because he was overweight.
In the episode called Love Business Chubby is in love with his teacher. Chubby shows up to give Miss Crabtree flowers and candy and tells her, "Don't call me Norman, call me Chubsy-Ubsy!"
Chubsy-Ubsy is a love and affectionate play on the word Chubby. A love name for Chubby.

There is a video with the scene in it. See the link and it’s about 2 minutes into the video.

The scene was so popular, the word Chubsy-Ubsy is still used today.
People use it now to politely refer to someone who is overweight,
Saying,” That person is too Chubsy-Ubsy for my taste.”
Instead of”That person is too fat for my taste.”

Hi Pbrdgrm,

Welcome to the forums! And thank you very much for your answer.

I've watched the clip of video from the link you offered. I clearly heard that he asked his teacher to called him Chubby-ubsy! He was adorable. I never heard about him before this.

One of the most popular American child stars I love is Shirley Temple. She indeed was a sweet cookie with attractive dimples.

Hello,
Thanks for welcoming me to the forum.

Yes, that’s a great clip of Chubby. I remember watching those shows when I was young and I really enjoyed them.
Those old movies are forgotten treasures.

Shirley Temple was another one I watched a lot. She was a shining star. This a wonderful photo of her.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent catch, pbrdgrm! I must admit that when I saw the thread title I immediately thought of Norman coyly telling his teacher, "Call me Chubsy-Ubsy." You are either as old as I am, or an avid student of pop culture!

Thank you. I am 40 years old and I love History. I also enjoy people who type in complete sentences. Seeing Norman smile always puts a smile on my face. That poor soul had a rough time in the last year of his life.
You might be interested in a new DVD that just came out. Its called:The Little Rascals Complete Collection An 8 disk collection. It can be rented at blockbuster. This is the first time all of the shows have been released. Sadly, In the years before this, a lot of people thought the shows were racial, stereotyped and just not politically correct. Some still do. The shows have been suppressed and heavily edited for a long time. It's nice to have a way to see them again. I think the shows are great and they are history. They show much of that time period. It was actually the first show to present children of all races, creeds, color and sex to be on equal ground.

It's fun to hear from those who enjoy those little rascals.

Please feel free to correct my grammar.
