Default How exactly does this sounds?

Dad: What?! That really stinks, Daria!
Mom: Easy, Jake. Focus.
How rude is the phrase "That really stinks" in this case?
Is it close to "That really sucks!" or to "It's bad!"?

"Stinks" is far less offensive than "sucks." You'll hear prim church-going grandmothers saying "well, that stinks!", while they'd never dream of saying "that sucks!"

"Stinks" is to "sucks" as "darn" is to "damn."
