[Grammar] ‘excited about’ VS ‘excited for’

These are two sentences from the Macmillan dictionary online:
---
excited about: I’m so excited about the trip!
excited for: Are you excited for your trip to Italy?
---
Is the preposition ‘for’ OK in the second sentence? I thought it was only OK with a person, group of people or some organization. For instance:
I'm excited for my son, who has been accepted at a very good college.
I’m excited for my classmates who ...
I’m excited for my country which could overcome the crisis.
But ‘excited for a trip’ sounds strange, doesn’t it?

No, the second sentence is not correct. Your other examples are correct.
