I'm wondering if anybody would ever use the contracted form of had.
If I'd my credit card with me, I'd have bought the coat.
"If I'd my.." sounds weird to me. Would you say so, anybody?

I would say:
If I had my credit card, I would buy a coat.
If I had my credit card, I'd buy a coat.
If I had had my credit card, I would have bought a coat.
If I'd had my credit card, I would've bought a coat.

I'd better leave now. I'd done that work before. I'd already left when he arrived. I'd like to know how to do that, etc. I'd can mean "I had" or "I would." If I'd had had my credit card.
Yes, but the specific question here is the use of a contracted "had" where "had" is the main verb.
I'd a dog, until he died. This isn't normal in any dialect I know of.
No one is questioning its contraction as an auxiliary.

If you hadn't told me about Sue's hair, I wouldn't have noticed
Unless you told me about Sue's hair, I wouldn't have noticed.
Unless..

Here is my "take" on these.

Will it be 'told' or 'had told'?
