Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

“Hello Terry” he said, “how’s things?”
A box of birds,” Terry said.

a box of birds = to be very well indeed (would you tell me a few words concerning the etymology of the present phrase?

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

V

Not a teacher only a native.

According to the internet, it is a New Zealand phrase meaning 'I am fine', so your interpretation is along the right lines. As for the etymology I'm afraid I can't help you.
