Is it common?
It sounds kind of old-fashioned to me; I wouldn´t say it´s commonly heard, but it isn´t rare either.

:?: Maybe it originally had something to with the belief that aristocrats had blue blood. People don't use the expression 'blue blood' much nowadays either; but one of the Lords in Iolanthe sings
