Yes, you construct a fantasy consciously. Dreams just happen.

Hi there!

Is there any real difference between the nouns fantasy and dream?

Thanks.

Sometimes either word can be used, but in many cases only one fits. For example:

At night we have dreams, we don't have fantasies.

Fantasy is a genre of movies, books, etc.

If we have a "dream" for the future, there is usually (but not always) a chance it will come true. If we just have a "fantasy" it is usually something that is just nice to think about but almost certainly will not come true.

There are more difference, too. Are you using these words in a specific context?

Thanks for the answer.

Actually this is the sentence in which I want to use one the words mentioned:

I wish I could be a butterfly, so I would be flying now. What a charming dream/fantasy.

In my opinion, either word is fine.
