I find the Thanks button useful on occasions when:

1. something makes me smile;

2. it saves me the trouble of saying the same thing;

3. it supports the reply of a non-teacher;

4. it needs to be said and the original poster hasn't bothered.

My pressing of the thanks button for the last post was, on this occasion, for Rover's reason 2, feeling that 'same thing' covered all four points.

By the way, can you also say, "Perhaps they wanted to see how many replies it got."?
On the one hand it looks strange, but on the other hand it's the same as:
If I see someone hurt, I'll help them.
(No matter if man [him] or woman [her]).

Yes, you can, and I could have used "they". It's just a question of personal preference really.

I would just be sad to see this delightful thread die out, so have posted this to help keep it going. :)

But this doesn't allow us to say, "They was affraid.", does it?
It's about one person whose gender does not matter, but still we should stick to were, shouldn't we?

Yes, indeed this is a unique thread, so maybe we could consider possible answer to the question "????????"?
I would suggest "!!!!!!!!"!
When in Rome, do as Romans do, when asked in punctuation marks, answer in punctuation marks...

(For the record: sometimes, when one uses a keyboard layout different than English, writing non-English symbols could result in question marks.)
