'Leave him be' or 'Let him be.'

I sometimes hear say "Leave him be."

I wonder if this sentence has a grammatical error and I think it should be "Let him be."

or is this an idiomatic expression?

and are there any examples of 'leave + object + verb root'?

Both expressions are common.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I hear "leave" as slightly more aggressive, as if there was some [more] intervention happening.

Example:

1: I can’t believe he’s still sleeping!
2: Leave him be.
1: But I didn't try to wake him.
2: Well, just let him be.
 
I can't see that distinction, Bob, but I'm not saying you're wrong.
