Look at this reading. Those two questions are tricky. What do you think.

Weather forecasting is the use of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a given location. Human beings have tried to predict the weather informally for thousands of years, and formally since the nineteenth century. Weather forecasts are made by collecting quantitative data about the current state of the atmosphere on a given place and using scientific understanding of atmospheric processes to predict how the atmosphere will be on that place.Once an all-human endeavor based mainly upon changes in barometric pressure, current weather conditions, and sky condition, weather forecasting now relies on computer-based models that considers atmospheric factors. Human input is still required to select the best possible forecast model to base the forecast upon, which involves pattern recognition skills, teleconnections, knowledge of model performance, and knowledge of model biases. The ever-changing nature of the atmosphere, the great computational power required to solve the equations that describe the atmosphere, error involved in measuring the initial conditions, and an incomplete understanding ofatmospheric processes mean that forecasts become less accurate as the difference in current time and the time for which the forecast is being made increases.

1. According to the passage, weather forecasting ------------.

1) is a new technology
2) has a long history
3) began less than 100 years ago
4) is not as effective as it used to be

2. The passage is mainly concerned with ---------------.

1) the reasons why humans are attracted to weather forecasting
2) the circumstances under which weathermen make mistakes
3) a definition of weather forecasting and the way it is done
4) the early methods used to predict weather conditions

My answers: 1. 2 (To me, #4 would work as well.)
2. 3

I agree with your answers. I'm wondering why you think 1.4 might be right.

For the first question I looked at this section:
.... .mean that forecasts become less accurate as the difference in current time and the time for which the forecast is being made increases.
That's why I'm stuck between #2 and #4.

For the second I thought at the first that No.2 can work too.

"... forecasts become less accurate as the difference in current time and the time for which the forecast is being made increases"
This does not mean the forecasts are not as effective as they used to be.
It means that if you predict weather for next week, it will be less accurate than your predictions for tomorrow, and predictions for next year will not be accurate at all. This says nothing about whether such predictions would have been more accurate a few centuries or millennia ago.

Raymott look at this question:

What does the passage state about the role of humans in modern weather forecasting?

1) Human work is a necessity.

2) There is no need for humans.

3) Even people with no expert knowledge can do weather forecasting.

4) It now depends more on human intervention than was the case in less modern weather
forecasting models.

I would choose #4. Yet, would you please tell me what's wrong with #1?

Is these questions for assessment?

The passage does assert 1. I don't think it makes a determination about 4.

Assessment? What do you mean?
Thank you for your answer.
By assessment, I mean are these results going onto your academic record as your work. You know, the homework rule?

Not at all. I'm not a student.
Another question. Look at this section:

.... that forecasts become less accurate as the difference in current time and the time for which the forecast is being made increases.
Can we say that "which" here refers to "processes"? Or it should refer to "time"?

It refers to 'time'. There are two times mentioned 1) current time and 2) the time for which ...
