Claim needs correcting

We can say "something needs doing". Like this battery needs changing. So can we say "This claim needs correcting or amending?". Do we need to say "this claim needs correction or amendment?".
 
In BrE, it works, but I don't think the form is used in all variants. I remember a thread a few years ago with some American speakers who thought the form was incorrect, but will wait for an AmE speaker to confirm that.
 
In my dialect, we would say it "needs corrected." But that is considered "non-standard."

"Needs to be corrected" is how I would say it in a "standard" form. But I see nothing wrong with "needs correcting."
 
I believe Dave pointed out the construction that was objected to.

The car needs washed.
The room needs cleaned.
etc.
 
I wasn't aware that "It needs corrected" was considered standard in any variant. As I think has already been said, it's definitely not acceptable in BrE.

It needs correcting.
It needs to be corrected.
 
It is not standard in AmE either. It exists in a dialect.
