[General] a bit vulgar at times

Hi.

I have a friend whose English is good but he does use vulgar phrases and words from time to time. I wonder if the following sentence is natural if I want to describe him like this.

"His language is a bit vulgar at times".

 
Yes, that's fine.
 
Many would say that vulgarity is part of good language usage. The trick is to swear appropriately and for good effect. And not too often.

Your original is okay, but you could also say "His language is a bit coarse at times". It's not necessarily any better, just an alternative.

I forget how I once heard it expressed, but it was something to the effect of "limited cursing vocabulary equals a limited imagination", which I rather agreed with. I'm not averse to profanity and even use it myself, but listening to somebody drop the f-bomb every other word just becomes annoying. I'm tuning you out at that point, so if you actually want me to listen, use something new and original.
