It is a story about the relation between a couple. It says that the husband is always late for the dinner.

Here is an extract from it: "I was running late again for the dinner appointment with my wife... , but to my relief, I had a good excuse: A business meeting had run over and I'd wasted no time getting to the dinner."

What does "run over" mean in this sentence? Be over? But I can't find such a meaning for the phrase in the dictionary. Thanks for help!

It ran over time. The meeting ran past the time it was due to end.

A more common expression would be overrun.

In the US we say it the way it's written originally.

Sorry I'm late. The last meeting ran over.

You might also hear "The meeting ran on", The meeting went/ran over time" and "The meeting finished late" in BrE.
