Dear teachers

Do these sentences read well?
Do they have the same meaning?

I trust you won the game last night.
It seems you won the game last night.
I believe you won the game last night [as you sound so happy this morning].

Thank you

Dear teachers

Do these sentences read well? (mosly!)
Do they have the same meaning?

I trust you won the game last night.
It seems you won the game last night.
I believe you won the game last night [as you sound so happy this morning].

Thank you

The first expresses a hope. The speaker has no idea and there is nothing in the listener's behaviour to give a clue.

The second one is quite rarely used - perhaps the speaker is reading the sports pages of a newspaper. It could also be used because of the other person's attitude - but it sounds as though the speaker expects applause for guessing right. ;-)

The third seems rather odd. It suggests that the speaker was challenged to guess. The normal way of expressing a guess based on the other person's attitude is 'It looks like/as if/as though you won the game last night'.

Very accurate answer, Bob, Thank you! And I was going to compare it with 'hope'. Funny!
