A peasant is someone who rents a small piece of land and grow crops.

I understand that above sentence means that peasant takes on rent a piece of land for growing crop. Could you please help me to understand that why don't we use "takes on" before "rents"?

How does "rents" means taking something on rent?

We don't use the phrase "on rent", but if we did, "rent" would be a noun.

I'd use and grows crops. However, in the UK, the term peasant belongs to history. You could use smallholder.
