A peasant is someone who rents a small piece of land and grow crops.

I understand that above sentence means that peasant takes on rent a piece of land for growing crop. Could you please help me to understand that why don't we use "takes on" before "rents"?

How does "rents" means taking something on rent?

Rents is a verb in the original sentence.

I've never read/heard the expression "take something on rent".
Is it idiomatic/natural English?

I rent a house.

I took a house on rent.

Are these sentences correct? From above I understand 2nd one is incorrect.

1. I rented a house.
2. I took a house on rent.

Are these sentences correct? From the responses above, I understand that the [STRIKE]2nd[/STRIKE] second one is incorrect.

Note my corrections above. I have changed the tense in sentence 1 so that it at least matches the intended meaning of sentence 2. However, as I already said, sentence 2 doesn't work. I've never heard anyone say "take something on rent".

Is rent a "noun" in the 2nd sentence?

Is this sentence in general correct without referring the second sentence? I am bit confused in using "rent".

Is rent a [STRIKE]"[/STRIKE] noun [STRIKE]"[/STRIKE] [no quotation marks] in the [STRIKE]2nd[/STRIKE] second sentence?
We don't use the phrase "on rent", but if we did, "rent" would be a noun.

I'd use and grows crops. However, in the UK, the term peasant belongs to history. You could use smallholder.
