You’ve said that all Americans must be able to participate in and benefit from science. What’s the biggest challenge to that?
Let’s start with the fact that science has always been unwelcoming to women and people of colour. This is a major priority — to make sure that we really eliminate that. There are large parts of the country that really don’t have a science high school or a science industry — where somebody who’s really interested in science can’t easily get involved. So there’s unwelcoming and there’s inaccessible. We’ve got to overcome both of those barriers.

Does "a science high school or a science industry" mean "having received science education at high school or having had a science zeal (hard working for science)"? I am not sure. It appears possibly otherwise (e.g., it could mean "a high school dedicated to science or an industry in which people should frequently use scientific knowledge to do their work).

No.

That's what it means.

By "science industry" they mean that there are not employers in the area who employ scientists.

It's not a very natural phrase. Science isn't an industry. Chemicals, pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, etc. are industries that would tend to employ scientists.

Well, the speaker goes against my impression (or imagination) of America, in which the Silicon Valley, a synonym for high-tech industry on this planet, uses countless scientists to achieve supremacy in every field of science (seen in this light, America does have a science industry). Eric Lander the speaker has now made this impression gone with the wind.
