Mary is a book lover. She could read by yourself at the age of four. Last year, she decided to try out for a volunteer after-school reading program. She still works there once a week to help kids learn to read.

In this context, Mary has joined a volunteer after-school reading program to help kids learn to read. In other context, I wonder if Mary’s joining a volunteer after-school reading program could mean that she’s just a reader in the program to improve her reading level.
