Can we say "stripes across the body" for vertical stripes and "stripes along the body" for horizontal stripes on the body of a fish?
Example: The fish has white (vertical) stripes across its body.
The fish has red (horizontal) stripes along its body.
Can we use across/along for a thing that partially seem to cross or run along: in the case of fish the vertical lines do not cross its body fully; neither do the horizontal lines completely run along?

Note: I had posted the same on word reference but there was no reply.

Can we use across/along for a thing that partially seems to cross or run along something? In the case of fish, the vertical lines do not cross its body fully no semi-colon here [STRIKE]neither do[/STRIKE] and the horizontal lines don't completely run along its body.

Note: I [STRIKE]had[/STRIKE] posted the same on Word Reference but there was no reply.

Please note my corrections above.

The simple answer is no. If you only say "stripes along" or "stripes across", we have no way of knowing whether they are horizontal or vertical stripes. You need to be specific.
You can use the phrases even if the stripes don't cover the full body but you'll need to make that clear.

This fish has black and yellow vertical stripes along its entire body.
This fish has black and yellow vertical stripes only from its head to the middle of its body.
This fish has red and green horizontal stripes along its entire body.
This fish has red and green horizontal stripes along the top half of its body.

Can we not say
The fish has vertical stripes across its body.
Is using across wrong?

Could you post a picture or a link to a fish with the stripes you're interested in?

Can we say the fish has blue and white vertical stripes across its body? I have posted the picture for you.

Basically, yes. You're right that along means from head to tail, but across doesn't mean from top to bottom. You could use down instead.

A zebra has stripes all over/along its body.

This cardinal fish has horizontal stripes all down its body.

The origin of the common name is simple. They have black stripes vertically across the body, similar to the uniform prisoners in Britain wore. These people were called convicts.
