Can we say "stripes across the body" for vertical stripes and "stripes along the body" for horizontal stripes on the body of a fish?
Example: The fish has white (vertical) stripes across its body.
The fish has red (horizontal) stripes along its body.
Can we use across/along for a thing that partially seem to cross or run along: in the case of fish the vertical lines do not cross its body fully; neither do the horizontal lines completely run along?
Note: I had posted the same on word reference but there was no reply.
