In the first sentence, the person being addressed has very recently gotten off the plane because they're still exhausted from the flights.

In the second, we're discussing an event that happened in the past—a couple of days ago at a minimum.

They took the scenic route - guy code for 'pilot was lost, but refused to ask for directions".

I'm more curious about how they managed to carry enough fuel to fly that long.

It doesn't say that it was a non-stop flight. The plane might have landed briefly somewhere to refuel; or the person might have had a couple of connections.
