What is the difference between these?

After flying for 36 hours, you must be exhausted.

After flying for 36 hours, you must have been exhausted.

In the first sentence, the person being addressed has very recently gotten off the plane because they're still exhausted from the flights.

In the second, we're discussing an event that happened in the past—a couple of days ago at a minimum.

I don't know about exhausted but the person's arms must be extremely tired! ;-)

Tough crowd.:-?

36 hours? That is more than any flight today- the longest flight is about 19 hours, so what were they doing?

They took the scenic route - guy code for 'pilot was lost, but refused to ask for directions".

I'm more curious about how they managed to carry enough fuel to fly that long.

It doesn't say that it was a non-stop flight. The plane might have landed briefly somewhere to refuel; or the person might have had a couple of connections.

Layovers, delays, etc.
