All kinds of music are provided for by the various record companies. (My bold.)

Can we omit the preposition "for" ?

Are you certain you've copied the sentence exactly? I'm not concerned about the word "for" but there's a glaring error in that sentence that I wouldn't expect to find in a dictionary.

The typo is corrected. Thank you.

In “are provided for by the various record companies,” the verb is the phrasal verb provide for, which means to supply or to make available. The preposition for is an essential part of that verb.

If you remove for, the meaning changes and the sentence becomes ungrammatical in this structure:

❌ All kinds of music are provided by the various record companies.
→ This sounds incomplete or unnatural because provide normally requires for + what is supplied.

If you want to avoid for, you’d need to restructure the sentence, for example:

The various record companies provide all kinds of music.
All kinds of music are supplied by the various record companies.

So: “for” cannot be omitted unless you rewrite the sentence using a different structure or verb.
