Are these rules correct? (I make these rules for myself to categorize 'already' and 'surprise', but all examples are from the internet)
1) We use simple present tense with 'already' to show surprise.
2) We sometimes use present continuous and past continuous tenses with 'already' to show surprise.
3) We use Simple Passive with 'already' to show surprise.
4) We sometimes use present/past perfect with 'already' to show surprise.
Simple Present Examples: (I doubt that all these examples are to show surprise.)
We are already late.
John is already a writer of some notoriety.
*You already know that I admire your work.
*He is already here.
In other words, NEVER buy on credit what you can't already buy using cash. Period.
The project is already well underway.
There are too many people already here. We can't take any more.
Are you back already?
Perhaps they are already there by now.
Important changes are already in the pipeline.
Present and Past Continuous Examples:
Her body was already starting to decay.
The children are already learning to multiply and divide.
The rival political parties are already jockeying for power.
They are already battling to eradicate illnesses such as malaria and tetanus.
Politicians are already gearing up for the election.
Simple Passive Examples:
Our finances are already stretched to the limit.
Insurance companies are already overburdened with similar claims.
