Hi all,
I'm looking for an American word for 'shove up' meaning moving the body to make space for someone else.
Do we have one?

Thanks

I don't know where you're going with "shove up". Most phrases in AmE involving those words are...impolite, to say the least. However, I can tell you we simply say,"Make room." when we need to squeeze someone else into an elevator or some such.

I saw "shove up" in Cambridge Dictionary as an informal British word.

Could I scootch in here? Would you mind scoothing over a bit?

It may be spelled with a K

"scoot over" (or move over) and "scoot back" (or move back) are pretty common as well.

"Shove up" is two words, therefore it would be an informal British phrase, not word.
I would say it is more than informal - it's downright rude. If someone (other than a very good friend or a relative) simply said "Shove up" to me, when they wanted me to make room for them, I would not be happy. I would expect someone to say "Can you move over please?"
