Dear all:
What is the exact meaning of the word "interpellation" in the following passage? It is from the book Nationalizing Iran by Afshin Marashi, p. 60. Does it mean "inclusion"?
"Jalal al-Din Mirza’s tracing of Sassanian portraits from European sources is an apt metaphor for the process of interpellation by which pre-Islamic images were filtered into modern Iranian consciousness through contact with European scholarship."
Jalal al-Din Mirza lived in the 19th century, and was among the first Iranian nationalist who focused on pre-Islamic Iran and included portraits of pre-Islamic Iranian kings in his books.
