count
n.
an act or process of adding people or things together to find the total number : an act or process of counting — usually singular
https://learnersdictionary.com/definition/count
the act or process of naming numbers or adding one by one
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/count
---------
I am thinking of why the former uses 'an' while the latter uses 'the'.
I assume:
Using 'an' means that we are talking about things in general - there are many 'act or process of adding' and we are talking about one instance of them.
Using 'the' means that we are talking about a specific thing - there are many kinds of 'act or process' and we are talking about that kind: 'the act or process of naming numbers or adding one by one'.
Is that right?
