Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

It’s true the boy looked so innocent and seemed even a trifle shy, but appearances were deceptive. (W. S. Maugham, “Then and Now”)

appearances are deceptive = don’t judge by appearances

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

Yes, so in your example sentence, the expression implies he was not (innocent and/or shy)

Vil,

I know what a serious, conscientious, and courteous learner you are.

So I thought that you would like to know this saying -- if

you do not already know it:

You can't judge a book by its cover.

***** NOT A TEACHER *****
