Neither one makes any sense.

If the price of petrol had not increased, the car would not have sold. (This is illogical but grammatical.)
If the price of petrol had increased, the car would not have sold. (Logical and grammatical.)
If the price of petrol had not increased, the car would have sold. (Logical and grammatical.)

The last two examples are identical.

If the price of petrol had not increased, the car would not have been sold. (The owner could have afforded to run it.)

Thanks, I've edited it so that my three examples are now different.

Thanks for replying !

If the price of petrol had increased, the car would not have sold.

My question is : If the price of petrol had increased --- > shouldn't this be in passive voice ??? (here who had increased the price ?? -- if there is no nay clear subject, shouldn't it be in passive voice ???) otherwise what are the Subject and Object of this sentence ? just see this : If Joe had increased the house rent --> here joe is a person (Subject) and the house-rent is the Object !!!

It doesn't matter who increased the price of petrol. If you want to use the passive voice, you could say 'If the price of petrol had been increased...' but the original is just fine.

Please note that a better title would have been The price of petrol.

The subject of the sentence is "price" and the verb is "had (not) increased". It is not passive voice.
