Does the underlined phrase read well for native speakers?

Is journalism destroying the English language?

Because I found that sentence in the New York Times editorial.


The grammatical error is noticeable even to me.
 
Journalists have never been noted for their use of fine English. The mistake is not uncommon, even among those who should know better.
 
It may also be a typo.
