Back in the day people used to have a weird hairstyle where there middle hair was kept as it is or intact however the sides were cut so small that the side hair looked like stuble.

Note my corrections above. I assume you're talking about some sort of mohawk. You can Google "pictures of people with a mohawk haircut".

Although "Back in the day" is used in English, it's not clear from your post when you're talking about. I suggest you use something like "In the 1980s".

There are quite a few haircuts where the sides are noticeably shorter than the top of the head. For many years I preferred what my barber called a 'campus cut' (so called because it was once a popular haircut with college males), where the sides were very short, almost at a buzz-cut, but the top of the head was longer, taping to a length towards bangs where the hair was still long enough to comb over or part.

I can't find a exact image of my old haircut, but here are some similar styles where the sides are quite short with the top being of varying lengths. None of them are quite as dramatic as a mohawk cut, nor would I consider them "weird".
