[Idiom] BAG OF CHIPS OR PACK OF CRISPS? Difference?

I've read this from time to time but I don't really know what is its actual meaning. Please could you clarify this for me?
 
BrE - a packet of crisps

AmE - a bag of chips

The above are thin slices of potato deep-fried. Like these:

AmE - fries

Those are deep-fried potato sticks, like these:
