Please help understanding this text.

Barring an error on my part, John Paul II Will thus have been the first. Pope to sanction in that way - timidly, it is true - the existence of the homicidal gas chambers.

The errors are, a capital "w" for "will", the full stop after "first" and the comma after "timidly".

It means "If I am not mistaken" or "If I haven't made a mistake".
