dear teacher,
I have learnt many uses of "would" in the past events such as past repetitive action, rejection in the past, will of past, progressive action of past but when I came across these sentences below, I was just confused corresponding it to would. is it a grammatical mistake from the writer or not? If would has been used grammatically correct , please help me how the "would' has been used in the sentences below?
In addition to all these factors was the rise of Sikh power in rebellion against the brutal Afghan rule. Of all the factions involved in the power struggle the Sikhs would be the ones who would benefit the most from the Third Battle of Panipat. By 1763 they would capture Lahore and even though Adbali would invade Punjab four more times and also commit massacres such as the Vada Ghallughara, the Sikh ascendancy in the Punjab region would not be stopped and the Indian territories of the Durrani Empire would be lost to them, liberated by a native power.
