“Is this done by now?”

Is the above grammatically correct?

What type of tense does “is done” have here? Is it present simple?

The "by now" sounds unnatural to me.

Is this done?
Has this been done?

Done is the past participle of do.

Done
is the past participle of do.
Is it not an adjective in this example?

Yes, I suppose it is. Not enough of a grammarian to say whether it can be both.

@Barque Your English is great but please remember to write in complete sentences at all times on the forum. We need to set a good example to learners.

“Is this done by now?”

Is the above it grammatically correct?

What type of tense does is “is done” have here? Is it present simple or is “done” an adjective here?
It is not grammatically correct. "By now" doesn't work with the rest of the sentence. We don't use "is done" to mean "has been completed" much in BrE but, in my opinion, "done" is an adjective in that usage.

There are various grammatical alternatives:

Is it finished?
Is it finished yet?
Have you finished it?
Have you finished it yet?
I thought you would have finished it by now.

As a rule, "by now" doesn't work in a question. It's OK in a statement (as in the last example above). In a question, it would be "yet".

So can I say “This is done by now.”?
