What's the meaning of "call work"?

I imagine it means to call = to use the telephone. And "work" is who you are calling, meaning some people who also work for the same employer.

If I were sick, I would call my department secretary to inform her that I would not be in.

I thought that "call work" was a unique verb or expression, but with your explanation I understood it better!
