Can I use two tenses in one sentence under certain circumstance?

For instance:

it does not matter what kind of candy I ate.

Is it legitimate?
Yes it's fine. "It does not matter (now) what kind of candy I ate (in the past).

Dear Bhaisahab,

I sometimes get confused about the use of tense in the conditionals. Will it be also OK if I say something like this;

If I had taken that chance back then, money wouldn't be a problem to me now.

past condition- present result
