Hi,

I've seen it many texts when people 'break with traditions' which perhaps suggests a deliberate action. How about breaking with rules? (Let's say when one tries to be creative in the world of arts)

Well, you can break the rules either on purpose or by mistake.

No.

Breaking with tradition = "breaking with" (phrasal verb) + "tradition" (noun)
Breaking the rules = "breaking" (verb) + "the" (article) + "rules" (noun)

Well, you can break the rules either on purpose or by mistake.
Thanks. Can I conclude by using 'break with' we try to suggest we're trying to distance ourselves from something, like traditions in this case?

And, is there any better phrasal verb to use for 'rules' to convey that purposefulness? (Not necessarily to show objection, but to try finding new ways.)

@Mehrgan You can say that you are breaking new ground to suggest that you are doing something new and innovative.
